The two greatest jazz cornetists of all time were New Orleans legend Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong (1901-1971) and Davenport, Iowa, great Leon “Bix” Beiderbecke (1903-1931). Bix, a true child of the Jazz Age died tragically young (“of everything,” a friend said), but not before his extraordinary cornet tone and stylistic creativity made him a legend. Satchmo lived to be the greatest jazz musician of all time: his technical prowess and inventive, joyous approach defined for generations what it meant to play jazz. In this evening’s concert modern greats Jim Cullum and Byron Stripling pay tribute to the masters, backed up by The Jim Cullum Jazz Band and Dick Hyman at his jazz piano best.
