OFAM is proud to present a very special Heritage Concert Series performance – the extraordinary 1918 musical play L'histoire du soldat or The Soldier's Tale, written by Igor Stravinsky and C. F. Ramuz as a traveling exhibition designed to improve their dire financial position in the wake of World War I and the Communist Revolution in Russia. One of many excellent examples of the sea change occurring in classical music parallel to the ascendancy in popular music of ragtime and jazz, the Faustian story of a soldier’s pact with the Devil is an excellent companion to James Paul and the Festival Orchestra’s August 22nd presentation of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring and this evening’s exploration of how jazz influences orchestral composition in the 20th century.
