We conclude OFAM 2000 with a power-packed evening reminiscent of the great Festivals de Jazz de Paris of 1949, ‘50 and ‘54, which, in keeping with the musical currents of post-war France, gave voice to both the traditional jazz of the incomparable soprano saxophonist Sidney Bechet and Bebop, the new jazz emitting from the instruments of Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Thelonius Monk, and Gerry Mulligan among others. Dick Hyman welcomes an all-star line-up to recreate both. He and his rhythm section (Doug Miller and Alan Tarpinian) first back up Jazz Kings power Steve Owen and Festival favorites Randy Sandke and Byron Stripling for a tribute to Bebop. They then join world-renowned saxophonist and Bechet student Bob Wilber, vocalist Pug Horton and jazz guitar great Howard Alden for a huge Bechet set. The Young Artists Academy opens the show.
