Jesse Cloninger and The Emerald City Jazz Kings, The Shedd's resident historic jazz & popular music ensemble, offer up a choice selection of what music historian Alec Wilder called "The Craftsmen" -- flat out exceptional Songbook composers whose body of work wasn't so huge as to, in Wilder's case, warrant a separate chapter in his seminal 1972 study American Popular Song: The Great Innovators, 1900-1950, or, in ours, to be conducive to a full concert. But the songs they did are just fabulous, so what do you do? Here you go! A fine selection of some of the best. Many of these composers pop up throughout OFAM 2017. In this concert we focus on, especially, Hoagy Carmichael (1899-1981), Duke Ellington (1899-1974), Jimmy McHugh (1894-1969), Harry Warren (1893-1981), and Jimmy Van Heusen (1913-90).
