For OFAM 2002's first orchestral offering Maestro James Paul and The American Symphonia are joined by pianist William Wolfram for an all-Gershwin classical blowout. The "serious" highlights on the program are Gershwin’s ever-popular tone-poem An American In Paris (1928), and the piece that many consider his best developed orchestral effort, Concerto in F, for piano and orchestra (1925). The program begins with the overture to the 1930 Gershwin hit musical Girl Crazy (which provided the basis for the 1992 musical comedy Crazy for You! -- see OFAM 2002 schedule for August 3, 4 & 7) and also includes Gershwin’s Three Preludes for Piano (1926) and Robert Russell Bennett's famous A Symphonic Portrait of Gershwin's Porgy and Bess, for orchestra (1942).
