Dynamic conductor Robert Ashens enters his fifth season as Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of Eugene Opera. Ashens garnered tremendous critical acclaim as he conducted Pagliacci and La Bohème last season. He also returned to Eugene Ballet Company as conductor of The Nutcracker, made two stunning appearances with Oregon Mozart Players and conducted daCorneto Opera’s Chicago premiere of Verdi’s i Lombardi. He returned to Chicago in July to conduct the first production of Lucrezia Borgia (with orchestra) in over 100 years, for daCorneto Opera. The Maestro will return to daCorneto Opera, and to Eugene Ballet Company this season.
With a repertoire of nearly one hundred operas, he has conducted to great acclaim for the Connecticut Opera, Opera Idaho, Augusta Opera, Shubert Opera, Opera Maine and for Teatro Grattacielo at Lincoln Center. He has served as Music Director and Master of Ceremonies for tributes to Metropolitan Opera stars, Lili Chookasian and Paul Plishka and has accompanied such greats as Lucine Amara, Marcello Giordani and Plishka. Ashens is in constant demand as a lecturer, accompanist and program director for concerts and recitals nationwide. As an educator for nearly thirty years, Ashens’ unique style and commitment focuses on inspiring people of all ages and backgrounds through dynamic, energetic and lively presentations of this multi-faceted art form. His lively wit and humor continue to enthrall opera audiences of all ages.
