In this 2nd of two 1998 American Classics concerts, James Paul, guest soloist Christopher O’Riley, and the Festival Orchestra present an evening of among the best examples of the jazz-influenced orchestral tradition, focussing particularly on work written in the 1920s and ‘30s: John Alden Carpenter’s Krazy Kat, written in 1921 for a ballet based on George Herriman’s famous cartoon strip of the same name; George Gershwin’s lesser-known but far more mature Second Rhapsody (1931); Maurice Ravel’s Piano Concerto in D for the Left Hand (1930), which was written for a friend who had lost his right arm in the First World War; Paul Hindemuth’s Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by Carl Maria von Weber (1943); and Dick Hyman’s Friendly Conversation for Jazz Band and Symphony Orchestra (1975).
