Through a discussion of a handful of key 1920s musical comedies with a specific eye to their musical content and its relation to their respective books, Shedd Institute executive director Jim Ralph makes a case for the "unintegrated" musical comedy as a vital and rich form of American theatre which served a critical role in the rise of the classic American song.
