"His songs sound as though they were born that way--God Almighty!--not written!" -- Harold Arlen
"She is one of those singers who can make a compact with the audience, who can reach them so that they reach back and become part of the experience." -- Irving Berlin
The 4th in the Verve series, Ella Fitzgerald Sings The Irving Berlin Songbook was released in 1958. Paul Weston arranged the 32 songs on the two-disc set, which was nominated for a Grammy for best Album of the Year. Ella herself won the Best Female Vocalist of the Year for the her work on the project.
For this afternoon concert, Julie Alsin and Michael Stone join Ken and the guys for 11 songs from the album (some of which were also favorites of Sinatra) and 3 Berlin classics from the Frank Sinatra rep.
