"Anat Cohen is the best jazz clarinettist on the planet. Not breaking news either, as longtime fans will know. And because of this, what Cohen's next project is always becomes need-to-know. And the title track of Brazilian-themed Reconvexo to be released by the Anzic label in mid-October does not disappoint. A duo album, Anat co-leads with 7-string guitar virtuoso Marcello Gonçalves. Recorded in Rio last year their very sunny version of Caetano Veloso's glorious 'Reconvexo' introduced by Veloso's sister Maria Bethânia on 1989's Memória Da Pele is streaming. Guaranteed to put a smile on your face – for all the right reasons." - Stephen Marlbank
The Shedd Institute welcomes the brilliant clarinetist Anat Cohen back to Jaqua Concert Hall, together with the phenomenal 7-string guitarist Marcello Gonçalves for an evening of luxurious Brazilian repertoire of samba and the Tropicalia movement, including material from their newly-released Reconvexo, which reimagines songs by Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Milton Nascimento, Dorival Caymmi and other Brazilian masters. The special connection between these two players has been deepening since 2017, when they released Outra Coisa – The Music of Moacir Santos, their elegant exploration of songs by one of Brazil’s great composers. Nominated for a GRAMMY, the recording illustrates precisely why Cohen adores the duo format: “It’s very intimate,” she says. “You’re always so exposed when you’re playing duo, and there’s a lot of space and a lot of room for emotional expression.”
