Dave Douglas has won every award for composition and trumpet playing from every serious jazz institution imaginable. His latest project, The Septet, is yet another example of his genre bending ensembles featuring the hottest improvisers in jazz today. The high octane jams heard on the forthcoming album "Freak In" include six Douglas originals played with a visceral energy by a burnin' super-group: David Gilmore (guitar), Jamie Saft (keyboards), Seamus Blake (sax), Brad Jones (electric bass), Derrick Phillips (drums), DJ Olive (turntables), and Douglas (trumpet/leader). The Septet's sound is plugged in and revved up, squashing the barriers between electronica and jazz while maintaining the tightly composed nature of Dave's finest projects. The music is part Miles Davis circa "Live Evil" and part electronic grooves a la Mouse on Mars thanks to the spins and scratches of the incomparable DJ Olive.
If you liked last year's performance of Dave and his Balkan improv group Charms of the Night Sky, then be sure to come out and hear what Dave can do with a tasty electric band. Imagine the same interesting compositional style with the same virtuosic musicianship all turned up to eleven.
