A co-presentation with the U of O’s Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, The Shedd is proud to present Japan's most amazing and whimsical noise-makers - Maywa Denki. Referred to in their own press releases as both a company and an art unit. Maywa Denki was established in 1993 by "parallel-world electricians" Masamichi and Nobumichi Tosa, a pair of brothers who, using the machinery from their father’s old factory, invented and developed various products – many of them unusual, cleverly designed, kooky musical instruments. Given the nature of the instruments, seeing the group play is something like observing a Rube Goldberg creation come to life. Creating a comical yet industrial atmosphere seemingly born from a combination of Devo, Kraftwerk, and Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory, Maywa Denki straddles the fine line between performance art and just plain silliness in a show appropriate for the entire family!
