“A jazz singer of cool poise and effervescent style.” – Nate Chinen
“Blond and blue-eyed, with a voice as pure and sparkling as mountain spring water... Every number in the show became an intense rhythmically tricky conversation between the singer and her musicians, whose solos amplified the ideas without tumbling into exhibitionism.” – The New York Times
“Called “devastatingly intimate” by her colleague Mark Summer, cellist and founder of the Turtle Island Quartet, this collection of romantic standards and three originals by French guitarist Serge Merlaud casts a spell from the dreamy opening track, “You Must Believe in Spring”, to the delicate closer, “Answer Me, My Love”. — BTM Jazz
“Paris Sessions is easily the most informal item in Sutton's discography, but the idea of informality shouldn't carry a negative connotation; quite the opposite, in fact. This is a work of unfiltered beauty, successfully pairing vocal temptress with guitar and bass guitar.” – All About Jazz
“A serious jazz artist who takes the whole enterprise to another level.” – The New York Times
For her first appearance at The Shedd, Tierney Sutton is joined by guitarist Serge Merlaud bassist Kevin Axt for an evening based on their 2014 project Paris Sessions. Recorded at Val d'Orge Studio in December 2012, Paris Sessions offers an intimate, revealing set of duos and trios which includes three Merlaud compositions and a range of songs by Rodgers & Hart, Heywood & Green, and Berman & Legrand among others. The intimate chemistry between singer, guitarist Merlaud and Tierney Sutton Band bassist Kevin Axt is maintained throughout. “I wanted to just sing the song and do sweet, straightforward treatments,” says Sutton. “No bells and whistles, no crazy arrangements…just the essence and the mood of the songs. And I think something succeeded because if I’m in an agitated mood and I put this record on, it just centers me.”
