For its second concert, the Carl Woideck Jazz Heritage project will perform music by two of the most original and prolific composers of modern jazz, Thelonious Monk and Charles Mingus.
Pianist Monk and bassist Mingus were parallel figures: Both emerged in the 1940s, were associated with modern jazz and created large bodies of compositions. Just as important, both formed unique, personal musical styles that transcend the categories of jazz. The works of Monk and Mingus continue to engage and challenge today's listeners and musicians alike.
At this concert, look for new arrangements of well-known Monk and Mingus music ("Round Midnight" and "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat") and lesser known pieces ("Epistrophy" and "Pithecanthropus Erectus"). Saxophonist-arranger-jazz historian Carl Woideck leads the Heritage Project, and will be joined by Oregon jazz greats Greg Goebel, Tyler Abbott and others.
